Apocalyptic! That's what my friend called the sky outside her home mere miles away from raging wildfires. The air quality was so poor she and her kids couldn't go outside. They were prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice. Her youngest child was freaking out. They cycled between crying jags, picking fights and trying to bolt out of the house. This child (let's call them Sam) is highly sensitive and empathic. Not only do they pick up on thoughts, feelings and energy from people around them, they're incredibly tuned in to the plants, animals and energy on this planet. Needless to say, they were very aware of the devastation across the West Coast. Not only were they afraid for their own safety, they sensed the distress of creatures losing their habitat and perishing in the fires.
To top it off, Sam was extremely upset that their mom seemed too calm. To Sam this meant she wasn't taking the dangerous situation seriously enough. SO Sam came up with a scheme to incite her concern. They faked and then dispatched an emergency broadcast! Fortunately my friend figured out Sam's ruse before she'd packed everyone and everything into the car to high tail it out of dodge. Thank Heavens!
Later, as we discussed the situation, my friend recognized how hard it was for Sam to experience such BIG emotions with no-one mirroring a similar intensity. All Sam knew was that something was really scary and nobody appeared to be as worried or afraid as they were. I share this story because it illustrates some of the challenges parents (or caretakers) of empathic kids deal with. It's hard enough being an empathic adult but empathic kids often have an even harder time. They don't have the self awareness or coping skills we develop with age and experience, so their empathic distress is more likely to come out sideways.
Here are some examples.
- Inability to identify and/or articulate what's going on
- Emotional volatility and moodiness
- Difficulty self regulating or self soothing
- Reactivity
- Melt Downs
- Physical issues (including but not limited to digestive distress, loss of appetite, food sensitivities, allergies, headaches, heart ache, insomnia, breathing difficulties and energy shifts)
- Acting out to provoke a response
- Self harm
- Difficulty focusing
- Struggle with Learning Disabilities
